Happy New Year to you!
A few years ago, I decided to change up my New Year Resolution tradition by starting my own ritual. Instead of setting a goal that I probably would forget about, or by having too many goals that would eventually lead me to feel like a failure, I decided to choose a focus word – one word – that I could align myself with and come back to repeatedly throughout the year.
It’s been illuminating to look back over the years and see what these words have been and remember why I chose them at that particular time in my life.
Stability (newly divorced). Peace (raising a toddler). Joy (stepping out of the box). Balance (after giving and doing too much). Abundance (open to receiving).
In the past, these have been my personal themes, my one-word mantras, that have set the tone for the year ahead.
I write out my word in my journal and on a piece of paper that I tape to my wall so I can reflect on it over the year. A year is a long time, so seeing my intention, or theme, each day reminds me to keep it simple when I’m getting stuck in fear, feeling overwhelmed, or when I compare myself to others and feel like I'm underachieving.
This past December, in each of my yoga classes leading into the winter holidays, we did restorative poses with journaling. In every class, I did the journaling prompts along with everyone else. The word that repeatedly came up for me was Fun.
So there you have it.
My one-word mantra for 2022 is Fun.
What's yours?
I'd really love to hear from you as we start this new year.
Please comment below or join my yoga group on FB to share your one-word mantra for 2022. Eventually, we can look thru them all and be inspired by other people's one-word mantras and intentions for 2022.
Wishing you all the best this new year!
